Update 14th October 2011 With the Salmon season drawing to a close a good friend who has never experienced a Salmon came to fish, whilst we saw plenty during the day, none were for talking the fly. Inexperience has nothing to do with it, the case is the same for everyone fishing the beat, they have had a hard time of it during the past fortnight, why ?, RELEASE WATER !!!!! All anglers in this area are all bouncing mad about it!, why ? was it necessary to release so much water. One day a single rod saw 44 Salmon another day another rod saw 32, both experienced anglers, both had a Salmon on an off. Running fish, and they were hell bent on it. Grayling fishers were blaming the Salmon Anglers (falseley) for asking for a release, well that is what I believe unless someone did ???, as the Grayling were also off the 'take'. An Unneccesary evil such releases are, killing the river off, no hatches and cold peat stained water from deep down from 'Llyn Celyn', poured onto the best run of Salmon seen in the past decade... There better be a good and valid reason for it , for it is now under investigation. Anyhow my good friend decided to have a go at dry fly fishing and ended up with this tiny one, well !!, it was the only fish that came to the fly, his first Grayling!, well done Mr Gibney. ![]() Update 12th October 2011 Philip Jones spent the afternoon bending the double hander after the Salmon, he managed a nice Seatrout of a bout 2 lb which was well coloured up and full of eggs, she went on her way, then a few casts later he bent into something substancially bigger, possibly a Salmon, which promptly shed the hook, that's fishing !, well done on the effort Philip. Also noticed an Otter kill, a Grayling of 2lb plus, scaled and threequarter eaten.... Hey Ho !!!, ![]() And not to be outdone.... Philip with his first Welsh Dee Salmon, well done Philip.! ![]() Update 11th October 2011 Plenty of Salmon showing, but very reluctant to take the fly. Matt Brookbank yesterday with a Hen fish estimated at 14lb, returned, on her merry way to produce more. ![]() With the unseasonal weather we are experiencing, the Brown Trout are more active on the surface than the Grayling, no one could have told them that the season is drawing to a close. Huw Thomas had a great day with a size 14 'Sunfly' in the Upper Dee, 9 Brownies and 5 Grayling. Here are a couple of Pics and what he had to say. ![]() ![]() Thanks so much for the most enjoyable day's fishing I've had for a long while, but more importantly for the expert tuition and advice you gave me. I'll try to remember it all - reach cast, not too far on the back cast, keep moving, cover the water sytematically and don't keep offering the soup if they don't want it! I'm enjoying your book and will attempt to replicate some of your fly patterns over the winter months. Update 29th September 2011 Ventured out to fish myself today, harsh sunlight and very warm all day, managed a 12lb Salmon on a small tubefly, and had 8 Brown Trout and 7 Grayling on a Cul-de-Canon.All released. Here are some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() Update 27th September 2011 Well what a nice day today in the Upper Dee, 'Indian Summer'. Philip Jones managed into double figures on the Trout and Grayling front on a 'Cul-de-Canon'. A number of fresh Salmon were seen during the day but they all evaded capture. Philip into one of the better fish. ![]() Update 22nd September 2011 Had this one lunchtime today estimate 14lb on a Thunder and Lightning, he was released to do his business ![]() Update 14th September 2011 River is still fining off and was about 6" lower today and still clear. Wendy Royles enjoyed a birthday outing securing her first Welsh Dee Grayling with a 'Rat'. She had a couple and a nice Brownie aswell. ![]() Fished myself for an hour this evening and secured this one, it went away to do it's business. ![]() Update 13th September 2011 Rhys Harris enjoyed his day in the Upper Dee today with his first Salmon ever and 11 lb 8 oz beauty. ![]() Andy Murphy fishing the same beat ended up with three, two grilse, kept for the table and a 16lb Hen fish which was returned to do her business. Excellent day. River is also dropping to a nice condition, next few days should be good. Update 6th September 2011 River in flood today, they will come now in numbers..... well I hope they will ! Update 31st August 2011 Matt Brookbank with a very nice fresh run fly caught Salmon from the Upper Dee ![]() Update 2nd August 2011 Simon on holiday in the area decided to try his hand at river fly fishing for trout and grayling, never having had the experience before. He came with me to the upper Dee and what a hard day it was with the mixed weather, heavy / warm / humid / cool wind / heavy showers, a right mixed bag to contend with. However he managed two Grayling and a Brown Trout for his efforts. here is the best Grayling landed on a paraloop sunfly size 14. ![]() Update 23rd July 2011 Kevin and Gary enjoyed their day in the Upper Dee today securing 36 fish between them on a dry Olive Parachute fly. Mainly 2year old Grayling, 20cm to 25cm long ,great sport, with a smattering of quality Wild Brown Trout in and among them. They were looking up all day long, but were difficult under bright conditions, well done to the both of you, here are a couple of Pics. ![]() ![]() Update 14th July 2011 As the river dropped off after that last spate, I put the double hander with a small cascade through one of the pools, still in my slippers! and on the third cast I was in, Grilse I thought, but no a 5lb Seatrout. here it is. ![]() Update 29th June 2011 The silver tourists have arrived in numbers in the Upper Dee, here are a couple of pics from this week. ![]() David Burbridge with an 11 lb Salmon , it had some Sea Lice on it. ![]() Colin Jones with a 12lb Salmon Update 23rd June 2011 Richard on holiday in North Wales from the Bristol area decided to have a go a river fishing. I guided him in the Upper Dee today and he accounted for 29 fish in total a mixture of Trout and Grayling all succumbed to a 'Rat' when the wind was up and a 'Sunfly' whe the wind was down, here are a few pics for you. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Update 7th June 2011 Mixed weather today in the Upper Dee with a squally wind at times, the odd shower also, nevertheless Trevor and Chiara managed 21 between them, all Wild Brownies, mailny on a 'Sunfly', a couple of pics for you. ![]() ![]() |
