Update 22nd July 2010 The long awaited 'flood' came and rose the river just over 4', now it's dropping away nicely, David Burbridge had two Seatrout and Mark West another seatrout , spinning on the big water yesterday. Today Peter Weir had this nice clean 12lb Salmon, again on a spinner, should start fishing to the Fly tomorrow if the heavy showers cease.

Peter Weir's Salmon

Update 12th July 2010

Brian from Southampton sampling what the River Dee has to offer, did well with dries and nymphs today with a total of 6 fish, he enjoyed his day.

Update 10th July 2010

Fished today for Salmon in the Upper Dee, the release water is bringing some through, here is the result on a Black and Silver size 12 also had a Seatrout of 1lb 8oz (Pic on my Mobile Phone) which will not upload for some reason.

Update 25th June 2010

Mark West spent a few days with me on the River Dee this week and in exeedingly difficult conditions with bright sunshine and harsh wind at times took over 20 Brown Trout and a solitary Grayling on Dry Fly and Nymph tactics. Here are some pics.

Update 19th June 2010

John Thorne fished the River Dee today after the Grayling but they were conspicuous by their absence for some reason ??, one good grayling was hooked and lost but John managed 5 nice Brown Trout to save the day. Here is the best of them.

Update 14th June 2010

Peter Weir on the upper Dee yesterday took 15 trout with a mixture of methods, including some whilst stripping small flies back in fast runs. Not a single Grayling, just back and to on the 'feeding batting order' between the Brown Trout and the Salmon Parr. Here is his best fish.

Update 5th June 2010

Jose Villarino had his first experience of river fishing with a fly today and enjoyed it very much, here he is into a nice trout on a 'Rat'. With this Low Pressure looming in the Atlantic fishing will be difficult everywhere.

7th June 2010

A Welsh Dee Mayfly

Update 29th May 2010

The weather started off rather dismal this morning with two fronts fighting above our heads and throwing a few showers at us. The fishing started off slowly in the upper reaches but as the weather improved towards lunchtime the Brown Trout started to oblige in a mixed hatch of Olives and chironomids with the odd sedge thrown in for good measure. Darren Bell's group caught 19 fish between them, a pleasant day enjoyed by all. The 'Rat' and the 'Cul-de-Canon' were the successful flies.

Update 20th May 2010

The weather having promised to be settled and warm changed three times during the day and the fish had their heads down in the main all day long, despite the show of Chironomids and Olives in droves at times. Reg and Ann fished hard under poor fishing conditions in the upper reaches for very little reward. Ann returned 6 Salmon Smolts to go on their merry way and Reg managed this very nice Brown and lost a couple of very nice Grayling on the 'Rat'.

Update 16th May 20010

That cold North / North Easterly wind put paid to 'great' fishing this spring on the Grannom. The Grayling have been busy spawning at the tail of most pools on the Dee and the lower Alwen and the trout have been at them taking all the float away eggs, sort of a swap over, the Grayling do the same with the float away Salmon and Trout eggs in the Autumn. Hatches of the early Olives have been encouraging and a few of the fish have been showing some interest in them. If you are on the river at the right time you will succeed, but true to form there is a batting order. Grayling on all else off, Salmon Parr on all else off, Trout make a short appearance. The Grannom have now finished and the Chironomids are there in clouds and also the Aphids almost a lime green colour, suitable for this is an F fly in size 22. I managed one trout yesterday afternoon of 16" on an aphid , but spent 2 hours at him with six changes of fly before the success, he came to hand where the release tool was used, he swam away happy.

Update 30th March 2010

A tricle of Salmon are being caught in the lower reaches and an unconfirmed report of a couple at Llangollen last week. The water is at perfect height, what fish there are could travel through to all reaches.

Update 20th March 2010

River rose today after the heavy rain last night to just above Summer Mean Height and is carrying a little bit of colour. Some Salmon may make use of this rise in the level to make their upstream journeys. I did see a fish show in the Upper reaches the other day. With more rain promised for Monday, next week could see a 'springer' !!

Update 9th March 2010

The season for 2010 is barely a week old and there is a report of a 22lb + fish from the Erbistock area, caught on a single hander 7 weight??, not sure how true it is, but it is possible. Last year 2009 in March there was a small rise in the river and whilst bank clearing I saw a number of fish passing through an upper reaches beat.

Update 10th January 2010

The feeder streams are freezing over not much flow on them, the main river is dropping rapidly and the ice is creeping out into the pools from the banks.... the big freeze continues!

Update 2nd January 2010

A little more snow and frost overnight and today, river looks to be right, will fish on the 3rd and let you know. (Please look on the Winter Grayling Page)

Update 30th December 2009

Happy New Year to all clients and those who follow these pages!. I hope that 2010 will be a better year for all of you and I will endeavour to update these pages with what is happening on the Dee and on the Grayling front, every couple of days for you.

Update 10th October 2009

We have been waiting for the arrival of the Salmon in numbers in the upper Dee, well they have arrived in the past two days, have seen any number of fish. I managed a 9lb beauty last night and helped to beach this one of 16lb 4oz today. 7 days to go!!

Update 5th October 2009

Don Teaff from the USA on holiday in Wales, ventured out on the Welsh Dee today, hooked and lost a Salmon on a fly and then went on to catch a dozen fish with a dry fly. Well done Don.

Update 26th September 2009

Ian, Ian, Pete and Steve came with Steve James to sample some Upper Dee Grayling and Trout today. The best method was the Dry Fly a size 20 Olive Parachute. They accounted for 32 Grayling and Trout, here are some pics.

Update 5th September 2009

I wonder what this young man will be thinking about tonight when he goes to his bed! Three fish off the beat today 10lb 8oz,9lb,5lb.

Update 1st September 2009

This young man 'Harry' from North Yorkshire, came camping for the weekend in Wales, his first visit. Never caught a fish before, within an hour was a 'professional'. Here is the evidence.

Update 22nd August 2009

Barry Evans came to the Dee to fish for Salmon and we nearly ended up sunbathing. In the circumstances we decided to have a go at Trout and Grayling the trout obliged, this is one of seven he had out of one pool plus a Grayling. What did he catch it on? need you ask? 'The Rat' of course.

Update 10th August 2009

A VERY SPECIAL DAY TODAY

Having waited for seven years today was very special for me as I placed the small brandling worm on my grandson's 'pound shop' telescopic fishing rod on the Junction Pool in the Upper Dee / showed him how to cast with the little spinning reel and he was onto it in a flash, sharp as a razor this lad. Next thing "I've got one" and he wound in and i slipped the net under a nice brownie for him. "I want to take it home for mam to eat". A few casts later he's into a cracking Grayling which he released, then into another Brownie which joined the other one to make the meal a little more substancial. Yes all in all a very special day for me and one he will possibly not forget.

Update 3rd August 2009

A few Salmon are being caught in the upper reaches, but it's not all Salmon ! / Salmon !/ Salmon !, we searched for a Grayling with trotting gear and David Jones caught this fine Brown Trout, which was returned to fight another day.

Update 27th July 2009

Peter Weir is at it again a 13lb Cock fish which was returned to find the spawning grounds.

Update 26th July 2009

Ventured out this evening, cloud cover, slight drizzle and managed this lovely 'springer' on a size 10 Cascade, she was a lovely bronze colour, double tagged showing early entry into the river. Tag removed and returned on her merry way, hope she makes the spawning grounds. Estimate weight 12lb will let you know when the 'tag' is reported on.

Update 23rd July 2009

Peter Weir, barely 12 months into Salmon fishing, with six Salmon to date to his credit, took this 9lb 4oz beauty today on a Curry's Red he had tied himself..., his comment, 'It does not get any better than this does it?'.... 'Oh yes it does wait till you get a hat trick, then you can go for the Welsh Dee McNab! (Salmon / Seatrout / Brown Trout / Grayling) all in a day( Wink! Wink!)

Update 19th July 2009

River cam up again after heavy rain in the Alwen catchment on the 18th which coloured the river up and put three inches on the height. By mid afternoon it was fining off again so ventured out and from a known lie on the first cast into it came this 7 lb Cock fish, pic off the mobile phone

Update 18th July 2009

The long awaited flood to entice the fish to travel arrived and whilst too coloured on Friday, Saturday saw a slight drop in the level and the River clearing. I ventured out in the afternoon and was into my first Salmon of 2009 on a 'Tube fly' and a Wet cel 2 line, a nice clean fish of 11 lb. Will be out again in the morning!!

Update 5th July 2009

The Brown Trout fishing is still very good to the dry fly they are hard on the 'aphids' at the moment, lime green size 22 will work....The Salmon fishing is 'dire' though the river is still showing it's bones, these seatrout scraped their way up over the gravel, the better fish being on the 5lb mark, the trout shown spat out a six inch Salmon Parr!!

Update 22nd June 2009

It warmed up today and this afternoon with cloud cover I set off for an area in the Upper Dee, I was not surprised to see a good rise of fish. I managed 6 Brown Trout and a Grayling in an hour and a half with a size 22 parachute Iron Blue Dun....out of one pool....I then had to leave, the sun then broke through and was present for the rest of the day. I was back on the river at sunset and fished another pool taking a further 10 Brown Trout and a Grayling with the same little fly in just over an hour.... brilliant...four of the Brown Trout were stock fish the rest of them wild, all between 20 and 35cm.

Update 21st June 2009

River is below Summer level, fishing is very slow, some very nice Brown Trout to dry flies. Iron Blue Dun hatching for the past few days, the fish are locked on to them, the late evening rise tonight had to be seen to be believed.

Update 26th April 2009

The River Dee is showing her bones. Real low summer level and the real Spring is dragging in this year.... to date it is refusing to warm up there is a keen wind every day which rather kills the fishing.

Oliver on holiday 12th April 2009 with his family in North Wales decided to have a go at 'flyfishing' together with his father Patrick and booked a four hour session in the upper Dee....they were not dissapointed with the result. The Grannom has started to hatch but there is still a cold nip in the air together with the bright sunshine kept the fish close to the river bed. Success came by way of a very small tungsten beaded nymph infront of a dry. Oliver had a brown trout and an out of season grayling and Patrick had two out of saeason grayling. Here they are.

Nothing gives me more pleasure than to see someone succeed and secure their first Salmon on a fly. Colin Jones another client of the 'Hardy Flyfishing School'took this 10lb beauty today 23rd August 2008. In the right place at the right time doing the right thing, well done Colin. A week ago after a few words of advice and watching from a distance I told Colin 'it is only a matter of time now' that time came today.

Sally had her first Grayling on the 18th August on a nymph infront of a dry on the Crogen Beat in the upper Dee, the river is presently up and down like a yo-yo, not conducive to good fishing.

One of the clients of the 'Hardy Flyfishing School' Peter Weir with an 11lb Salmon on the 31st July 2008 caught in the upper Welsh Dee....his first Salmon!

WHAT ABOUT SOME SALMON FISHING TUITION ON THE WELSH DEE

2008 Season
Update 14th July 2008
River is fining off after the rain and a number of fish have been seen in the upper reaches, here is one of two I had today on a Gold Cascade.

Update 1st June 2008

River is at Summer low and has been since the last flood of late April dropped off. Another two Salmon have come off the beat during the month, another to Anthony Wright and one for Paul Collins, both carefully returned. The trout fishing has been exceptionally good with the 'Sunfly' working well. Trout in the 8" to 10" bracket with the odd one at 12". Peter Weir caught and returned 17 on Thursday the 29th May.

Update 8th May 2008

The flood in late April has helped push some Salmon through to the middle and upper reaches, I know of a 15lb (estimated) that came from a middle reaches beat and this brand new 11 lb (estimate) from an upper reaches beat on the 5th May to Anthony Wright's Rod on a Gold bodied Cascade.
